About

OUR BIRTH STORY…

The Lemon Grove was birthed from the original Lemons & Labor doula & photography business that owner & founder Marissa Hathaway started. Marissa comes from a career in global & local maternal health, trauma-informed care, and health education.

In 2023, Marissa founded the doula agency component of The Lemon Grove - an expansion of doula & community support, centered around a trauma-informed & evidence-based approach to supporting families across the perinatal span. We are a zesty team of uniquely experienced doulas, passionate about accessibility, straightforward communication, compassionate accompaniment, and judgment-free & resource-rich care. Through heartfelt collaboration, we aim to establish confidence and empowered decision-making in our community. In 2024, we opened the doors to the perinatal wellness collaborative - our physical space in Boxford, MA, where we host childbirth education, lactation, and parenting classes, fun activities for babies and toddlers with music, play, and education, and events for parents in the community.

Why the lemons? A note from Marissa:

“My maternal grandmother and I share the same birthday, and she liked lemons. Over the years, I have adopted the lemon as part of my identity, and even had a lemon inspired wedding! To me, lemons are not only the sentimental thread connecting me to my grandmother’s memory, but are also a symbol of refreshment, vitality, beauty, healing, the yin and yang of sweet and tart, and under the right conditions, can be grown anywhere. I am an active gardener and many of those philosophies transcend beyond a yard - I enjoy the practice of cultivating the environment around me, connecting with resources to ensure my “gardens” thrive in every sense, and to nourish people so they flourish.

This is our approach to supporting you at The Lemon Grove.”

Meet The Team

At The Lemon Grove, we provide professional, holistic doula support for every step of your unique perinatal journey. With an orchard of resources, we offer personalized, community-based care through labor & birth doula services, postpartum doula services, breastfeeding support/formula feeding support, prenatal education courses, and more.

Many of our doulas also facilitate our support groups & other events - let’s layer in as much community as we can for you!

After her own complicated journey through conception and pregnancy, experiencing a difficult postpartum time and spending six years as a stay at home mother, Randi found herself longing to provide new parents with the knowledge, help and support she knew would have greatly benefited her and her family. Randi began supporting her friends and family members through the newborn phase and loving every second of it! As more people began to lean on Randi for guidance, she realized that she had finally found her passion in her own life through this work. Because of these experiences as well as her own, she pursued an education as a birthworker focusing on the postpartum experience. As your postpartum doula, Randi looks forward to providing emotional, physical and informed support to help ease this transitional phase of life.

  • Jenny P.

Certified Birth & Postpartum Doula and Lactation Counselor

    she/her

Jenny’s interest in supporting birthing people goes back many years. While living in California in the mid-1990s, she acted as labor companion for a pair of close friends who were expecting their first child. She found the experience incredibly powerful and uplifting. It literally changed Jenny’s life, and pursuing a career in birth support became a long-harbored dream of hers.

In 2005, the birth of Jenny’s son added a completely different perspective to her experience. After a bout with breast cancer and struggling with infertility, she eventually got pregnant with the help of a medicated IUI, and went on to have a mostly complication-free pregnancy. Unfortunately, once she and her partner found themselves in the labor and delivery room, they faced questions for which they had no answers. Jenny’s son was born vaginally, with no complications, but her experience of his birth left her feeling frustrated and unhappy with herself and her choices. Jenny realized the critical importance of in-depth prenatal education, a plan to cope with labor, and strong perinatal support, especially for first-time parents. This strengthened her resolve to help others avoid the same situation.

In 2017, Jenny made the decision to put her graphic design career on the back burner, and take the plunge to become a birth doula. While she was excited about the chance to finally put her dream into action, it wasn’t until she had finished her training and joined the doula community that Jenny really understood the passion she has for birthwork. It is a calling in the truest sense of the word, and Jenny is beyond grateful to have the opportunity to engage in such meaningful work. After a few years of birthwork, Jenny decided to pursue a postpartum doula certification to increase the value of her follow-up work with birth clients. The early weeks and months of parenting is a time of such vulnerability for parents, and such high need for infants, that it no longer made sense to her to offer birth support alone. Jenny is now honored to assist her clients during the hugely steep learning curve that comes after birth.

When Jenny is not supporting perinatal clients, she is an independent book designer and also enjoys kayaking the beautiful lakes and rivers near her home, knitting, exploring the history of New England, & gardening.

You probably have heard before- “It takes a village to raise a baby.” But it also takes a village to nurture and support a mom after birth! During Anilka’s first six weeks of postpartum, she realized that she put so much effort into having her dream birth that she should have also taken the time to plan for the postpartum challenges. Luckily, she had a wonderful community around her to guide and support her in motherhood. Anilka is blessed to be that support system for other moms now!

Some say she is overly optimistic, maybe a little too woo-woo, but Anilka loves to see the magic unfold when she prioritizes seeing life through the lens of love and positivity. fellow parents during the postpartum period. Having experienced three c-sections and navigating three very different and often overwhelming breastfeeding journeys, she is here to offer you not only professional support but also personal understanding and encouragement.

Your needs are unique, and she tailors her services to meet those needs, helping families making their postpartum journey a time of confidence, comfort, and calm.

Prior to becoming a doula, Laura-Jean worked at a law firm for 17 years as a legal assistant. In addition to making sure the office ran smoothly, she provided a compassionate listening ear to people entering the office, with their own uniquely challenging stressors. Laura-Jean brings a lot of these skills and experiences into her work with families postpartum, tuning into what they need and meeting them where they’re at.

Outside of doula work, she loves spending time with her husband, kids and family.

Her advice to new parents is to expect a transition period, accept offered help, and feel confident to ask questions!
